Keyword research is an imperative part of your online success. If, by chance you are targeting the wrong keywords both the search engines and your customers will have difficulty finding you. The result being not only wasted advertising dollars, but importantly a waste of your time and energy as well. Not a good result if you want to stay competitive.
Keywords can be divided into two categories – ‘short tail keywords’ and ‘long tail keywords’.
Short Tail Keywords
Short tail keywords are highly competitive and therefore it can be very difficult to rank highly, it can be achieved, but will take a lot of time, work and also patience.
Long Tail Keywords
There are a number of reasons to consider long tail keyword research. Firstly it will be easier to rank well in the search engines due to less or weaker competition.
By targeting long tail keywords you can increase the number of pages to be ranked and indexed in your niche market, therefore increasing your websites visibility and search engine traffic, which in turn allows for greater monetization potential of your website.
Points to Remember:
- short tail keywords can be highly competitive and may take longer to rank
- long tail keywords may have less competition
- include the keyword in your heading
- the keyword should appear in the first paragraph
- the keyword should be bolded and italicized once only in the text
- try to include the keyword in the title
- keyword should also appear in the URL
Conclusion
Whether you can rank highly with short tail keywords or not the long tail keywords can still be very beneficial to your website profitability.

Hi Cheryl,
It is important to know the difference between long tail and short tail keywords as this will ensure you are making the most of your keyword research. If you’re a late entrant into a market that has a high level of competition, wasting money on short tail keywords isn’t going to get you anywhere. Long tail keywords all the way.
